Excerpt from “Highway”

“The snake in Utah had stayed on my mind most of the day, so seeing him on the rocks almost seemed natural. He was at eye level about three feet directly in front of me and comfortably coiled. I stood there wrapped in the same curiosity as that morning. I could’ve stepped back, grabbed my stuff and gotten the hell out, but his lure was too strong. He was tolerant of me and I was becoming more at ease with him. We remained motionless for a moment getting to know each other.”
